In 2017, the PC was poised to dominate.
In some ways, the shift from consoles to the PC wasn’t a total disaster: The PS4 was still the best console, with its latest game, Far Cry Primal, the best-selling PC game of the year, and a big portion of its catalogue.
However, the console-only games of the previous year, such as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, didn’t even make the top 10.
For 2017, however, things got weird.
While there was plenty of console-exclusive games, including the long-awaited Tomb Raider reboot, Assassin’s Edge, and Far Cry, it was rare to find anything that didn’t involve an exclusive release.
It’s easy to imagine the console wars had gotten a bit heated between PC gamers and console gamers when they were all arguing over which platform to play games on.
“In the past few years, a lot of the consoles have really focused on their exclusive titles,” said Matt Thompson, who heads up a gaming analytics company called Metacritic.
“That’s been a very bad trend, and it has been a really bad trend for a long time.”
The Xbox One was still in the top spot for most-played game in 2017, while the PS4 continued to dominate the charts, as well.
The PC’s resurgence wasn’t so much due to the Xbox One, but more so the PS Vita, which was a big hit for Sony.
“It’s a great platform,” Thompson said.
“If you can just get your hands on the game, you can get it.
It just so happens that the PS Vita is so good.
If you’re a casual gamer, the PS PS Vita is a good game to play.
You can play it, but it’s a lot more fun to play it with a friend.”
The console wars have never been a good thing.
Even with the resurgence of PC gaming, there were some games that could’ve gone either way.
The original Borderlands is one of the most popular games on the PC.
Its sequel, Borderlands: Ultimate Loot, is also one of Sony’s biggest successes.
And Assassin’s Quest is the best of the Assassin’s creed series.
While the PC has long been a popular platform for gaming, it hasn’t been able to maintain its position as the most played platform, which it was in 2017.
For the first time in over a decade, the PlayStation 4 was No. 1, with over 8 million users.
The Xbox 720, the first of Microsoft’s new consoles, is the fastest selling Xbox console.
“We’ve seen some games become much more exclusive, with exclusives becoming more and more important,” Thompson added.
“There’s just been a lot less of those games.”
For many gamers, the Xbox Scorpio, which is set to launch in March, is a major step forward.
The new console is designed to give gamers a new experience for $399.
However many people may not like it, the Scorpio is the first console to include HDR, which will be an important feature for a lot people.
“I’ve always been a big fan of the HDR thing,” said Aaron Parnell, a professional gamer who plays competitively on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.
“Because I like to play with my friends, and the way HDR has changed the way we play has changed my game a lot.
And I’m not even playing online right now.”
When the Scorpios release comes out, Parnesll plans to spend money on a console to replace his PS4, and he’s excited to play new games on it.
“The Scorpio will have a ton of new things,” he said.
He also plans to buy more games on Xbox Live, which means he’ll have a chance to play all of his favorite games, rather than just the big releases.
“When you have more than one console, you’ll have more chances to play them all,” he added.
Parnells Xbox Scorpios console is the very first console he’s ever owned, and Parnels excitement is building.
“As soon as I see the Scorpions release, I’m going to buy one and play all the games that I can,” he joked.
“And I’m a huge PS Plus fan.”
“I’m a big PS Plus supporter.”
