London’s Dorma will be the first to be made by an automaker for dormitories.
The new automated door design, which comes with a “zero-tolerance policy” for theft, will be unveiled next month at the London Design Forum, the city’s premier design and architecture forum.
The Dormas new design will have a built-in door lock, a self-locking mechanism to prevent burglars from breaking in, and a “door lock” that automatically closes on demand if the door is locked.
Dormacabins owners will be able to activate the automatic door from the lock via a mobile app or a smartphone.
The door will have four doors, including a small double door, which will be automatically opened when the room is empty, said Dormabins managing director, David Mazzone.
The Dorman will be “built to last” and will be fitted with a new “lamp-free” light system, according to the Dormamabins website. “

The Dorman will be “built to last” and will be fitted with a new “lamp-free” light system, according to the Dormamabins website.
It will be designed to “meet the needs of people of all ages and to be more energy efficient than traditional light-blocking lamps”.
The company has been in talks with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Home Office about the new design, said Mazzoni.
He added that the door lock will “be a safety feature for the people of the building, and will enable it to be operated by anyone, anywhere, without any need to leave the building.”
The new design comes with no security measures, but the doors will be locked at all times and there will be an “intercom system” that will allow occupants to call for help, Mazzo said.
He also confirmed that the new door will not require a separate keycard to open it, but will have an automatic keypad.

Dormatas first dorm was opened in March 2016, and has since become one of the most popular dorm rooms in the country.
In October, it received the prestigious Design Council Award for Excellence in Design.
Its new owner, the UK Government-owned British Dorm, has been developing its own dorm design since the Dorman was opened, with a plan to open more than 1,000 new dorms in 2017.
